MORPHEA

Close up of a human's back with morphea

What Is Morphea?

Morphea is an inflammatory skin disease that affects the deeper skin layers and underlying tissue resulting in fibrosis (tightening and stiffening) and, oftentimes, discoloration. Morphea has several different subsets: plaque, linear (en coup de sabre), generalized, and profundus. While the skin may itch or tingle, patients most often do not have additional symptoms..

Clinical Features

Although 40% of patients may have a positive ANA (Antinuclear antibody test), the specific autoantibodies of systemic sclerosis are not seen. Morphea patients have a very low risk of ever developing systemic sclerosis (SSc). Morphea is not associated with internal organ involvement and has an excellent prognosis.
